Sonae Styles, also known Tyla Thomas is a hair artist born in Tallulah, Louisiana, & raised in Dallas, Texas. She was first inspired to do hair at the blossoming age of thirteen being surrounded by the chic and evolving hair culture of the early 2000s. Although she is a licensed beautician, she was always self-educating herself throughout her life starting early studying French cutting techniques, African braiding techniques, ventilating and wig making artistry as a whole. Sonae is the owner of TressDeco Wigs & Extensions established in 2019 and in January 2022, she opened her first brick & mortar salon, TressDecoSalon in Austin, Texas.
In her time of being a hair artist, Sonae Styles has already seen many grande successes and achievements. In 2021, she spotted her first contribution on the April issue of Vogue with Nicole Truffino and Gary Clark Jr. Immediately following, she is published in Wall Street Journal working with Simone Biles right before her appearance in the China Olympics. That same year, Sonae begins working closely with celebrity artisit Rico Nasty where her works were revered in publications that included The Rolling Stones, and Black Girl Culture Magazine. The styles Sonae created were beginning to be seen by larger audiences and she became popularly known for styling and leading the extremely fashionable black girl mullet movement, where we were able to see an influx of celebrities and influencers wearing mullets inspired by Sonae herself. Sonae has had the pleasure of servicing many iconic and notable people including Grimes for Vanity Fair, Rubric for Marc Jacobs, Ashley Ciriaco with her rising luxury brand Ciriaco and many more.
One of Sonae’s biggest goals in her career as a hair artist is to help elevate the Black Hair Renaissance. Sonae is wanting to present the art she creates in a way that is intuitive to the roots of culture but dynamically different than the status quo. She gains motivation from the ability to push the culture to want to achieve more.
